Worth noting in the community: Free forum on childhood obesity prevention, more

The Bakersfield Chapter of the Links, Incorporated is hosting a free community forum on childhood obesity prevention.

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, the forum, a part of the Can You Imagine Me Program, will promote healthy eating, portion control and fun exercise for the entire family, a news release from the group said.

A local panel of experts will provide insight on how to raise a healthy and happy child. Topics include: exercise through play, nutrition, how to correctly take vitamins, and the medical wellbeing of your child.

Parents will be encouraged to keep a food journal over the summer and the person who submits the best food journal will win a bike, the news release said.

Lunch is provided by El Pollo Loco and the forum will be at the Emerson School Cafeteria, 801 4th St.

The Kern County Fire Department Academy Class 13-01 has marked the end of a four and a half month academy that tested various firefighting duties.

These recruits have proven they are capable of completing wildland fire tactics, rope rescue techniques and vehicle extrication, a fire department news release said.

Each recruit firefighter will complete their last week of EMT continuing education and will be sent to a fire station to live and work with other firefighters for the next three months.

A new Bakersfield Visitors Guide features countless ways to explore the city this summer.

The Bakersfield Convention and Visitors Bureau has designed its Visitors Guide around several key areas for visitors to explore, including Bakersfield's famous food, music and art scene, a bureau news release said.

Produced in a 50-page, glossy magazine-style format, the guide provides hands-on ways to explore Bakersfield's great outdoors and historic neighborhoods.

Look for the guide at city hotels and local attractions and amenities.Copies are available at the Visitor Information Center at 515 Truxtun Ave. in front of the Amtrak station. It's also available in digital book form online at VisitBakersfield.com.
