The convicted rapist of a 12-year-old girl was sentenced to 13 years in prison Tuesday.
Angel Frank Rodriguez had pleaded no contest in September to raping a child under 14 years of age, according to Kern County Superior Court records. Five other felonies were dismissed in the plea deal.
"It's gratifying to hold him accountable and put him in prison for a substantial length of time because his conduct was appalling and scary," prosecutor Nicholas Lackie said later Tuesday.
Defense attorney Charles Soria could not immediately be reached for comment.
Rodriguez at first told Judge Michael G. Bush that he wanted to withdraw his plea. Bush held a closed hearing in which the issue was discussed and the motion dropped. The judge then proceeded with sentencing.
Rodriguez was a parolee when he followed the victim and coaxed her into a vacant residence in the 1000 block of Oregon Street in late June 2011, according to Bakersfield police. Rodriguez smoked methamphetamine, tried to get the girl to smoke meth too and then blew smoke in her face in an effort to get her high, police said.
He then sexually assaulted the girl, after which she struggled with him and managed to get away, police said. The girl ran to a relative's house and reported what had happened.
Police found Rodriguez two blocks away and arrested him. The victim was someone he had met for the first time that day.
Rodriguez, whose aliases include "Tazmanian Devil," has a long list of arrests in Kern County. He pleaded no contest to felony drug possession in November 2007, pleaded no contest to the same charge in September 2004, and again pleaded guilty to drug possession in July 2008, court records show.
