Worth noting in the community: Tree lighting to honor Pearl Harbor, more

A tree lighting ceremony downtown Friday will honor those who died in the attacks on Pearl Harbor during World War II, according to a news release from the Bakersfield Downtown Business Association.
At 5 p.m. in the median in front of Bakersfield City Hall and Kern County Superior Court, several trees will be lighted. There will also be a ceremony honoring Kern County's oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor, Joe Licastro.
After the ceremony, there will be free horse-drawn wagon rides to view the seasonal lights downtown and to go to that night's First Friday holiday celebration, according to the news release.
The Independent Living Center of Kern County is starting a program to educate people with disabilities, their families and corporations that serve people with disabilities how to prepare for disasters, according to a news release from the center.
The program is being funded by a $6,500 grant from Pacific Gas and Electric, the center announced Tuesday in the news release. The program will be called "Empowered to Go."
Six workshops presented in English, Spanish and American Sign Language will focus on individuals. One workshop will be geared toward companies that employ or help those with disabilities. The center will give out 200 memory sticks on which people can store personal information to help identify themselves in a disaster.
More information on each workshop will be announced soon, according to the news release.
