Will Supes launch mega-departments in county reorganization?

By The Bakersfield Californian

Supervisors will be discussing the possible reorganization of some 15 county departments in several mega-departments or "agencies" in an attempt to consolidate some basic functions and possibly save some money.

Concerns that the move will decrease transparency of county government and reduce supervisors' access and understanding of how departments function -- ultimately reducing accountability -- have been raised. Some departments have seen their operations shifted into, and then out of, such agencies in the past and have said they'll be fine either way.

Others have opposed the change saying their functions are too unique to create the desired efficiencies that supervisors and county staff are looking for.

It should be an interesting discussion.
