Jails, cats and dogs on Supes agenda today

By The Bakersfield Californian

Kern County supervisors will discuss a second-round application for jail construction grant money from AB 900 at today's meeting of the board.

The grant could bring in around $100 million to build a new 790-bed facility for high security prisoners at Lerdo Jail.

They'll also hear an update on a nearly six-month-old referral they made to have Kern County Animal Control officials evaluate the cost to shelter animals from the city of Bakersfield under a contract first enacted in 2003.

Critics of the contract have said the $338,110 the county gets from the city is far too small an amount to fund the care and keeping of around 12,000 animals Bakersfield Animal Control officers bring in every year.
