The Rev. Monsignor Perry J. Kavookjian is replacing the Rev. Monsignor Michael R. Braun as rector of Garces Memorial High School, the private Catholic school announced Monday.

Braun, who served as rector for seven years, will retain his other position as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and School.

During his tenure, Braun oversaw such construction projects as the Cerro Science Building, the St. Dominic Student Chapel, the Salvucci Aquatic Center, the new tennis courts and the new batting cages.

He also led the renovation and repair of the student and staff parking lots and an upgrade of the school's technological infrastructure in preparation for the distribution of iPads to students.

Garces has also undergone a restructuring of its board of directors under Braun, and developed a school-wide financial plan and financial accounting system.

Kavookjian is the pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, where he is in the process of establishing and building a parish and constructing a new church and religious center.

Additionally, he has recently been elected to the position of vicar for the Kern/Inyo Deanery.

The rector holds a seat on the Garces board and serves as a liaison between Garces and Bishop Armando Xavier Ochoa at the Diocese of Fresno.

Kavookjian said one of his goals in his new position is to strengthen the school's relationship with churches in outlying areas of the county.

He's looking forward to getting to work, he added, to "help the school further its mission to instruct and train and form young men and women into good citizens who are prepared for college, and help them become better Christians."

In a statement, Garces President John L. Fanucchi thanked Braun for a "a very successful and productive seven-year term."
