Local student-historians compete at National History Day event


Several local students competed in a National History Day event last week at the University of Maryland.

The students qualified for nationals at the National History Day-California competition last month in Sacramento.

Results of last week's contest are:

Junior Group Exhibit

Fifth Place: Caitlyn Richter, Kaitlyn Moss, Fruitvale Junior High School.

Entry -- Drake's Well: The Ability to Drill Our Nation's Oil. A Turning Point in Energy, Industry and History (about the nation's first oil driller).

Junior Group Performance

Sixth Place: Miguel Vargas, Sadie Armijo, Stevie McNabb, Jake Beardsley, Dylan Pearson, Chipman Junior High School.

Entry -- No Turning Back (about the decision to use the atomic bomb in World War II).

Junior Individual Performance

Tenth Place: Cassidy Porter, Fruitvale Junior High School.

Entry -- The Story Never Dies (about the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.).
