Education roundup: Taft district names interim chief

Jamba Juice and Tilly's will co-sponsor a concert Friday at Bakersfield High School as part of a seven-city festival celebrating music and the arts.
The stores are sponsoring shows on high school campuses across the country to build music appreciation and expose students to careers including journalism, photography, film making, fashion, sound engineering and lighting. Student journalists will have an opportunity to interview the musicians and photograph the concert.
Talent will include The Rocket Summer, Blush, PK, Stamps and Camryn.
Taft Union High School District has named William "Bill" McDermott its interim superintendent while it looks for a permanent successor to Mark Richardson, who left to become superintendent of the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District. McDermott is coming out of retirement to serve in the post. He previously served as superintendent of the Coalinga-Huron Joint Unified School District.
To help keep potentially toxic electronics out of landfills and waterways, Bakersfield College is holding an electronic waste collection event 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the college's southeast parking lot at the corner of Mount Vernon and University avenues. Small electronics with circuit boards will be accepted, as well as car batteries and rechargeable batteries. No fluorescent bulbs, large appliances or lead batteries will be accepted.
Collected items will be recycled.
The California Community Colleges and the California State University have launched a new website that provides information about the new Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) that lets students earn an associate degree and a bachelor's degree with no wasted units. The website is ADegreeWithAGuarantee.com.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County will be celebrating its 52 after-school programs during Lights On Afterschool 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 18. There will be open houses and tours at its three area branches: Armstrong Youth Center, 801 Niles St., Bakersfield; Stockdale Club, 5207 Young St., Bakersfield; and Lamont Club, 8301 Segrue Road, Lamont.
This month, more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans will celebrate Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide event organized by the Afterschool Alliance to rally support for after-school programs.
