Education roundup: McCarthy to hold U.S. Service Academy forum

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, will hold a forum for students interested in attending one of the U.S. Service Academies at 11 a.m. Oct. 27 in the Kern County Board of Supervisors chambers, 1115 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield.
The session will cover the application procedure to receive a congressional nomination to one of the five academies. Academy liaison officers, along with visiting cadets and midshipman from the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will speak.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers appointments on the basis of a nationwide merit-based competition. No congressional nomination is required.

Award-winning journalist and author Sonia Nazario will speak 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Bakersfield College's Forum East building, 1801 Panorama Drive.
Nazario is the author of "Enrique's Journey," the story of a boy's dangerouss odyssey to reunite with his mother after she immigrates to the United States from Honduras. The journey that takes him through the roughest areas of Honduras and for a dangerous ride on El Tren de la Muerte -- The Train of Death.
Nazario will be on campus as part of Bakersfield College's Eminent Speaker Program, sponsored by the Bakersfield College Foundation and the Wylie and May Louise Jones Endowment.
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction's office on Thursday will roll out California's School Quality Snapshot, a new online tool that puts school test scores, class sizes, fitness levels, and graduation rates for all 10,000 public schools statewide on a single website.
Previously, that information was spread out on more than a dozen different web pages.
The two-page Snapshot provides a five-year overview of information about each school and its performance on key indicators, all accessible through the California Department of Education's website, www.cde.ca.gov. CDE staff from the Analysis, Measurement and Accountability Reporting Division and the Technology Services Division collaborated to develop the Snapshot using existing state resources.
The Snapshot will be formally released Thursday as part of the state's annual report on school accountability.
Kern High School District is holding its annual Principal Partners Day 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. More than 200 business, government and education leaders will tour one of 20 district schools holding open houses, followed by an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bakersfield. Bakersfield High School Principal David Reese is the keynote speaker.
