Education roundup: High schooler poses question to the president

Fernando Perez, a 15-year-old student at Foothill High School in Bakersfield, was one of seven youngsters the Nickelodeon television network selected to pose questions to the U.S. presidential candidates.
The Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, "Kids Pick the President: The Candidates," aired on Oct. 15.
Perez wanted to know what both candidates would do to help illegal immigrants obtain citizenship.
Romney's campaign declined to participate in the show, but Obama responded by saying he had worked administratively to implement a program to help young people brought to the United States as children earn their citizenship, and that he hoped to work with Congress to pass broader comprehensive immigration reform.
The California Endowment has awarded a "Health Happens Hero" award to Arvin Union School District Superintendent Michelle McLean . The award honors her for bringing healthier meals to students.
McLean leads a district team responsible for producing more than 800,000 meals per year. The district reformulated its menu options this year to include more vegetables and whole grains.
