Local student's artwork in calendar

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A Bakersfield fifth-grader is among 15 Central Valley students whose artwork is featured in the 2013 Healthy Air Living Kids' Calendar, a bilingual, full-color wall calendar just released by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.

Elizabeth Leung of Norris Elementary School in Bakersfield drew the winning picture for the month of February. It depicts an idyllic forest full of wildlife under the banner, "Think green, not gray."

The other winners were from Atwater, Clovis, Fresno, Lathrop, Lemoore, Madera, Stockton, Tulare and Woodlake.

The calendars are distributed to schools, community groups, healthcare facilities, churches, civic organizations and nonprofit groups throughout the valley. The district prints 20,000 copies of it to promote Healthy Air Living. To obtain a 2013 calendar, contact public.education@valleyair.org or 392-5500.

Bakersfield High School social studies teacher Jeremy Adams has been named a semifinalist in the California Department of Education's Teacher of the Year award program.

Adams has taught at BHS for 15 years and founded the annual civics education competition, "The Earl Warren Cup."

The 2013 California Teachers of the Year will be honored at a gala Feb. 11.

The Emma Bowen Foundation is recruiting minority students interested in paid, multi-year summer internships in technical fields such as computer science and engineering.

HealthCorps and Shafter High School staged a Find Your Greatness Health Fair at the school Tuesday.

A group of Shafter High students put on the fair for students and staff with the direction and support of HealthCorps and school administrators. It included Zumba, blood pressure screenings and healthy smoothie and snack options, among other activities.

HealthCorps is an in-school wellness movement founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife, Lisa Oz.

Garces students are collecting toys to be distributed to the center's children at the party. Anyone wishing to donate a new, unwrapped toy can leave one at the school's front desk.

The Mercy Learning Center is an afterschool program and resource center for disadvantaged children.

The following students earned awards at the Bakersfield City School District's Elementary School (Grades 4-6) Oral Language Festival Saturday.
