A Bakersfield motorcyclist was badly burned after colliding with an SUV Saturday morning on southbound Highway 99 north of South Union Avenue.

The California Highway Patrol said the accident happened at about 8:40 a.m. when Arturo Salgado, 24, moved from the No. 1 lane of traffic to the No. 3 lane "at a high rate of speed."

Salgado's 2014 Ducatti then struck the back of a 2005 Jeep Cherokee being driven at about 70 mph by 86-year-old Erla Coulston of Bakersfield, the CHP reported.

"Upon impact, the motorcycle burst into flames and the force of the impact caused the driver of the SUV to lose control, veering to the right off the roadway (and) overturning in the field," a CHP news release states.

Salgado suffered major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Kern Medical Center and then to the Fresno Burn Center. Coulston suffered minor injuries and was being treated at KMC.
