By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Bakersfield police arrested two men Tuesday in connection with a shooting incident near downtown.

Police responded shortly before noon to a report of shots being fired near 8th and Eye streets. Witnesses provided a vehicle description and police spotted it soon after at 10th and P streets.

Shawndel Ziegler, 22, and Anthony Gaston, 23, both of Bakersfield, were detained after witnesses identified the vehicle and told officers Ziegler fired at another vehicle.

Later, a woman came to the police department and said she was the intended victim of the shooting. Police examined her vehicle and found bullet holes consistent with the statements of the victim and witnesses.

Ziegler was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, participation in a criminal street gang and reckless discharge of a firearm. Gaston was arrested in connection with an outstanding parole violation warrant.

The firearm used in the incident has not been recovered.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the BPD Special Enforcement Unit at 326-3167 or 327-7111. Anyone wishing to provide information on street gang activity can do so anonymously by calling 325-GANG (4264).
