RV fire near Hart Flat contained to less than 12 acres

By BREAKING NEWS

A fire sparked near Hart Flat by a burning RV was contained to less than 12 acres Tuesday night.

The fire was started just before 3:30 p.m. by an RV on eastbound Highway 58 near Hart Flat, Kern County Fire Department Capt. Derek Tisinger said.

The RV was engulfed in fire when firefighters arrived and the flames had spread to a nearby hillside. The two people who were in the RV when the fire started suffered minor burn injuries when they tried to get from the cab to the living quarters to save two cats, Tisinger said.

The people were taken to a hospital in Tehachapi by ambulance for treatment. Tisinger said one cat died but he did not know the fate of the second feline.

Fifty firefighters attacked the fire with help from the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Firefighters got a good jump on the fire and stopped the progression of the flames, Tisinger said.

The cause of the fire appears to be mechanical.
