A suspect is in custody after breaking into a home and being shot by one of the residents, according to a Kern County Sheriff's Office news release.
At 10:48 a.m. Tuesday, deputies were called to a report of robbery in progress in the 5300 block of East Brundage Lane. When they arrived, the resident was in front of the home and told them where to find the suspect, later identified as Arturo Jose Luis Estrada, 26.
Estrada had broken into the home by removing a screen and breaking a kitchen window, according to the news release. The resident heard Estrada and grabbed a handgun. When Estrada came into the hallway, the resident shot him at least two times.
Estrada fled, but only made it one half a block away before collapsing. He was shot in the upper body and torso, according to the news release. He was taken to Kern Medical Center. His injuries are not life threatening.
A second suspect is possibly involved, according to the news release. That suspect is described as a Hispanic female with black hair. She ran away before deputies arrived and was not found, according to the news release.
The resident was questioned at the scene and released. The investigation is ongoing.
