Defendant pleads no contest in duct-taping children

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

A man accused of placing duct tape over the mouths of two 14-month-old children to stop them from crying pleaded no contest Friday to two misdemeanor counts of willful cruelty to a child.

Jose Picazo was sentenced to 180 days in jail, according to court records. A second defendant in the case, Soradia Carabantes, is scheduled to be in court Monday on the same charges.

Bakersfield police were contacted by Child Protective Services Dec. 27 regarding possible child abuse occurring in a home in the 1200 block of Monterey Street, police said. Officers contacted Picazo and Carabantes and learned of Picazo duct-taping the mouths of the children and also taping their hands behind their backs.

All children in the home were taken into protective custody.
