A Bakersfield man was seriously injured Thursday near Lake Tahoe after his bicycle was hit by a tractor trailer inside a tunnel.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Clarence M. Aldridge, 48, was on his bike in the Cave Rock tunnel on U.S. 50 overlooking Lake Tahoe when the accident occurred just before 10 a.m.

Aldridge was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center.

The truck, driven by Richard J. Pettay, 39, of Carson City, Nev., hit Aldridge from behind, throwing him from the bike. Pettay told officers he did not see the cyclist.

There is no bike lane inside the tunnel, where the speed limit is 35 mph. The highway was closed for about three hours.

Neither alcohol nor drugs is a factor in the accident.
