A Bakersfield man was hospitalized Friday after he placed his car in reverse and tried to step out the driver's side door, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Saturday.

Claude E. Smith, 66, was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 northbound on North Chester Avenue when his truck struck a stopped vehicle near the intersection of Roberts Lane.

Smith tried to place the truck in park, but instead put his vehicle in reverse. When he tried to step out of the truck, the Dodge began to move in reverse.

Smith was trapped partially in and out of the truck, the CHP said in the release.

The truck crashed into three vehicles, ultimately coming to rest after ramming into a chain-like fence east of the roadway.

Smith was taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
