'Doctor' accused of practicing medicine illegally pleads not guilty

A self-proclaimed doctor who was operating his practice out of his Bakersfield home without a medical license pleaded not guilty Monday to four felony and two misdemeanor charges.
Alberto Gonzalez, 58, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon other than a gun, practicing medicine without a medical certificate, drug possession for sales, receiving known stolen property, advertising as a doctor without a valid medical certificate and drug possession. A pre-preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
Police reports filed in Kern County Superior Court reveal officers were alerted to Gonzalez by a patient who believed she'd been injected with water or a saline solution even though Gonzalez claimed it was medicine. Gonzalez was arrested at his home in October after officers searched the residence and found evidence he was practicing medicine illegally.
Police also found two guns, one of which was reported stolen in Los Angeles County, the reports say. Gonzalez told police he had been a doctor in Mexico for 15 to 20 years and that he was "a doctor of natural remedies," according to the report.
