Driver gets three years' probation for fatal hit and run

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

A motorist who left the scene after striking and killing a 75-year-old man was sentenced Monday to time served and three years' probation.

Rosemarie Aguinaga pleaded no contest last month to hit and run causing death or permanent serious injury, according to Kern County Superior Court records.

California Highway Patrol officers have said Aguinaga was traveling east on Virginia Avenue approaching Wilma Street May 7 at 25 to 30 mph when Jose Angel Sanchez stepped directly in front of her vehicle. Aguinaga was unable to stop in time and hit Sanchez.

She stopped and saw Sanchez lying in the roadway, then drove eastbound on Virginia Avenue and northbound on Hazel Street, officers said. She parked her vehicle and walked back to the scene of the collision.

As she left the scene for a second time she was escorted back and arrested, according to officers.
