Soldiers kills himself during standoff

A soldier believed to have been suffering from mental problems possibly related to tours of duty in the Middle East shot and killed himself Thursday afternoon following a standoff with authorities.
Kern County sheriff's Sgt. Doug Wilson said Ben Smith, 33, of Golden Hills, committed suicide with a single shot just after 1 p.m., according to The Tehachapi News. Wilson had no other comment.
Scanner traffic had indicated Smith's home was on Black Oak Drive, the newspaper said.
