Two killed in traffic collision

Two men were killed in a traffic collision at the intersection of Columbus Street and University Avenue in northeast Bakersfield Saturday morning, police said.
The Kern County coroner's office identified the deceased as 31-year-old Severo Jose Ramirez and 33-year-old Leonel Del Toro, both of Bakersfield.
Ramirez was the passenger and Del Toro the driver, the coroner's office said.
Details of the crash were sketchy mid-day Saturday but three vehicles and six people were involved in the crash, which was reported at 8:31 a.m., said Bakersfield police Sgt. Graydon Argast.
The vehicles involved were a grey SUV occupied by an adult female and two girls age about 13 or 14 who suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital; a white compact car occupied by a woman who was not hurt; and a green Mazda compact occupied by the two who died, Argast said.
He said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
As authorities investigated the crash a few hours later, the smashed-up SUV was, facing the wrong way, in the left-hand westbound lane of University. The similarly smashed green Mazda was in the right northbound lane of Columbus just before University and turned toward the front yard of a house. And the Chevy was stopped in the left lane of northbound Columbus at the University light.
Argast said at the scene he didn't know how the crash occurred. KERO Channel 23 quoted witnesses as saying the green car ran a red light driving northbound on Columbus crossing University and was t-boned by the SUV.
The BPD could not immediately confirm that account.
