The 23rd annual Relay For Life event, held in Bakersfield over the weekend raised more than $1.13 million dollars in donations, organizers said Sunday.

The banner fundraiser for the national nonprofit American Cancer Society -- whose mission includes funding research, education, advocacy and service programs -- attracted thousands of participants.

According to volunteer organizers, the event, held near Airport and Merle Haggard drives, included 1,525 survivors, with 325 new registrations coming in on Saturday.

The number of teams participating was 335, with more than 3,900 registered team members contributing their energy and effort.

Organizers were thrilled by the results. However, one number was not available.

As it turned out, the passion to beat cancer exhibited by participants proved to be immeasurable.
