Man dies after struggle with deputies outside KMC

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A man died at Kern Medical Center early Wednesday morning after a struggle with Kern County Sheriff's deputies and CHP officers just outside the hospital.

A KMC security officer called deputies at about 11:55 p.m. Tuesday to report that there was a man in the area of Flower Street and Palm Drive who possibly was intoxicated.

A deputy with a canine found David Sal Silva, 33 and from Bakersfield, at the southeast corner of the intersection.

The deputy contacted Silva, who then resisted and they became involved in an altercation, sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said. Silva fought the deputy while the deputy tried to take him into custody.

The deputy called for help and also deployed his canine. Silva fought with the deputy and canine, Pruitt said.

Five more deputies and two California Highway Patrol officers arrived to help.

Silva was struck with a baton several times as he fought with deputies, Pruitt said. At one point, they were able to take him to the ground, restrain him and take him into custody.

An ambulance arrived to treat Silva, who started having problems breathing, Pruitt said. He was taken across the street to the KMC emergency room, where he died at about 12:44 a.m., Pruitt said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine cause and manner of death. Detectives are investigating.
