SWAT team called out after man flees attempted vehicle stop

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Bakersfield Police tried to stop a vehicle in the 700 block of K Street early Tuesday, but the passenger fled, leading to a SWAT standoff at a residence.

Police said James Lamar Thomas, 26, fled at about 12:53 a.m. SWAT team members called out to him several times and confirmed with someone in the home that Thomas was the man who fled during the vehicle stop, according to a police news release.

Thomas later voluntarily came out of the residence.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, participation in a criminal street gang, evading a police officer and a weapons violation.

Police said Thomas was wanted in connection with a shooting that happened in the 1900 block of Eye Street on April 20.

Police said Raymond Allen, 29, was the driver of the vehicle in the initial traffic stop. Allen was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, resisting arrest, being a felon in possession of a gun and participation in a criminal street gang for his alleged involvement in the April 20 shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police ask that anyone with information call 327-7111.
