Garage fire apparently started by kids playing with matches


SHAFTER -- Juveniles playing with matches started a garage fire at a house in the 800 block of Albert Street about 6 p.m. Friday, accordign to the Kern County Fire Department.

The garage was fully involved when crews arrived.

A total of 20 firefighters, assisted by Shafter Police, attacked the blaze. One person who had attempted quell the flames with a fire extinguisher was treated for minor burns to the arms and taken to a local hospital.

The fire caused about $50,000 damage to the garage.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind parents to teach children about fire safety.
