Some prep football games delayed to 8:30 p.m.

High heat and poor air quality have forced the Kern High School District to push back the start time of tonight's varsity football games across Kern County to until about 8:30 p.m.
Junior varsity football games will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity games will start soon after the completion of those games. Today's high in Bakersfield reached 103 degrees but the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District issued an "unhealthy for sensitive groups" warning for Kern County.
Kern High School District Director of Support Services Stan Greene said the start times only impact home games played in the Kern High School District. The district rules do not allow students to suit up for game between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. when days have high heat and poor air quality.
"By rule we can't start the varsity games until 30 minutes after the completion of the junior varsity games," Greene said.
Greene said that some schools, including Ridgeview and Highland, will play with running clocks for junior varsity games to ensure an 8 p.m. start for the varsity. The decision impacts the start time of nine games involving district schools. Here's the list of games delayed:
- Clovis at Stockdale
- Clovis-Buchanan at Liberty
- Independence at Highland
- Newhall-Hart at Ridgeview
- Wasco at Golden Valley
- South at East
- Foothill at Mira Monte
- Delano at North
- Lindsay at Shafter
The decision does not affect Bakersfield High's start time in Long Beach, but that he expected games played in other parts of the Central Valley, including those in Fresno and Clovis, to possibly be delayed due to the heat and air quality.
