A boy riding a bicycle in southwest Bakersfield was struck by a vehicle Sunday night and later died at Mercy Southwest Hospital.
The coroner's office identified the boy as 11-year-old Joshua Jimenez. He was struck at the intersection of Caracas Drive and Harris Road at 7:45 p.m.
Tips for cycling safely at night:
* Wear a helmet at all times.
* Dress in light-colored clothes.
* Use a bike headlight.
* Attach blinking lights on bikes.
* Place reflective decals or high-visibility tape on both sides of tire rims, and the outer sides of shoes and your helmet.
* Obey traffic rules.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Several candles had been placed at the intersection Monday afternoon.
