Vehicle strikes and kills boy, 11, on bike

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A boy riding a bicycle in southwest Bakersfield was struck by a vehicle Sunday night and later died at Mercy Southwest Hospital.

The coroner's office identified the boy as 11-year-old Joshua Jimenez. He was struck at the intersection of Caracas Drive and Harris Road at 7:45 p.m.

Tips for cycling safely at night:

* Wear a helmet at all times.

* Dress in light-colored clothes.

* Use a bike headlight.

* Attach blinking lights on bikes.

* Place reflective decals or high-visibility tape on both sides of tire rims, and the outer sides of shoes and your helmet.

* Obey traffic rules.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Several candles had been placed at the intersection Monday afternoon.
