Running red light likely caused fatal crash

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

A March crash that killed two people was likely caused by the failure of a driver to stop for a red light on southbound Columbus Street at University Avenue, Bakersfield police said.

The March 16 crash killed Leonel Del Toro and Severo Ramirez. Police said Del Toro was driving a Mazda sedan southbound on Columbus Street and Ramirez was a passenger.

A Nissan SUV driven by Felicitas Mendoza was headed eastbound on University Avenue and collided with the sedan, officers said. Mendoza was not impaired.

Del Toro's blood tested positive for THC, but it's unknown if he was impaired at the time of the crash.
