A suspicious object left at the front of the Kern County Department of Human Services building led to an evacuation of the building Friday afternoon and the response of the Bakersfield Police Department's Bomb Squad.
Police spokeswoman Michaela Beard said an employee called at 1:33 p.m. and reported finding a suspicious object at the front doors of the building at California and Union avenues. Police and firefighters arrived and the building was evacuated.
A Bomb Squad robot was used to remove the object from the building, Beard said. Officers took the object from the area and rendered it safe.
Beard said she did not have a description of the object, nor did she know if it was in fact explosive.
Several people who work at the building said they were not allowed to comment.
Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call them at 327-7111.
