The second defendant charged in a robbery that resulted in the death of a 72-year-old woman was found guilty Thursday of murder, robbery and of committing the crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang.
Lawrence Slaughter, 29, faces a potential sentence of life in prison at his May 13 sentencing, according to a Kern County District Attorney's office news release. Slaughter was an active member of the East Side Crips at the time of the crime.
Authorities have said co-defendant Christopher Harvell Patterson knocked down Guadalupe Ramos as he snatched a necklace from her Aug. 19 outside the Foods Co. market on Haley Street. Ramos died of cardiac arrest due to an irregular heartbeat brought about by blunt force trauma.
After the robbery, Patterson ran to a car occupied by Slaughter and 27-year-old Maxamillon Lee McDonald and they drove away, prosecutors said.
McDonald, the getaway driver, was convicted of the same crimes as Slaughter on April 8 and is scheduled to be sentenced May 5. Patterson, 20, is scheduled for a readiness hearing on April 26.
