Stray bullet strikes father at Patriots Park
By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
A stray bullet hit a father walking through Patriots Park with his son and another child at about 7:44 p.m. Friday, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Gerald Mitchell, 57, of Bakersfield, was hit in the chest and taken to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Friday night, police said.
Mitchell was walking through the southwest Bakersfield park in the 1600 block of New Stine Road with his 13-year-old son and another child when they saw two groups of males arguing, police said. A male from one of the groups fired and hit Mitchell, but it appears neither Mitchell nor the children with him were the intended target of the gunfire and they were not involved in the dispute, police said.
The suspects fled the area and have not been located.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact police at 327-7111.
