Lamont woman dies of injuries suffered in crash Thursday

A woman who was a passenger in a parked car that was struck by another car on Thursday has died, according to the Kern County Sheriff's department.

Maria Cecilia Gandara, 74, of Lamont, was parked in a Ford Mustang on the right shoulder of Edison Highway about noon with Isidra O. Hernandez, 41, of Fontana, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Jose Rios Castro, 53, of Bakersfield, was driving a pickup east on Edison Highway and veered onto the right shoulder, crashing into the Mustang.

Gandara and Hernandez suffered major injuries and were taken to Kern Medical Center, officers said.

Gandara died Friday about 3 p.m.

Castro suffered minor injuries and was also taken to KMC.

He is believed to have been under the influence of prescription medication and was arrested on suspicion of DUI, officers said.
