A former Bakersfield city councilman who earlier this year joined the staff of Kern County Supervisor David Couch has been arrested on charges of spousal abuse.
Mark Salvaggio, 63, was taken into custody Wednesday on a charge of misdemeanor spousal battery, said Bakersfield Police Department spokeswoman Michaela Beard.
Salvaggio was booked into the Kern County Jail, Beard said. However, an inmate search Thursday through the Kern County Sheriff's Office website indicated Salvaggio was no longer in custody.
Beard released no details regarding the circumstances of the arrest or the name of the victim.
Messages left for Salvaggio were not immediately returned Thursday night. Couch likewise could not be reached for comment.
Salvaggio, a retired Arvin Union School District teacher, served 19 years on the Bakersfield City Council. State legislators voted in 2006 to name the interchange on Highway 99 and White Lane for Salvaggio.
