The coroner's office has identified the 74-year-old man who Bakersfield police said was shot and killed by his son in northwest Bakersfield Saturday morning.
A coroner's office news release said James Patrick Murphy died from a "perforating gunshot wound" and the manner of death is homicide. He died 8:13 a.m. in the 10900 block of Artist Court, south of Rosedale Highway and west of Calloway Drive.
Bakersfield police said Murphy and his son, Geoff Edwin Murphy, 33, exchanged gunfire inside a residence. The son left the home with a bullet wound in his upper body.
Police said Geoff Murphy told them his father remained inside. James Murphy was found dead on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Geoff Murphy remains hospitalized and is under arrest on suspicion of murder, two counts of elder abuse and two counts of making criminal threats, Bakersfield police spokeswoman Michaela Sims said Wednesday. She said the investigation is ongoing and further information on what happened can't be released at this point.
No one answered the door to the Murphy residence Wednesday morning, and three neighbors declined comment.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Detective William Toler at 326-3857 or the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
