A 2-year-old Bakersfield boy died at a Madera hospital Tuesday morning, the day after he fell into a swimming pool.
Abel Galvan was pronounced dead at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Children's Hospital Central California in Madera, according to a Kern County Sheriff's Department Coroner Section news release. His death was caused by nearly drowing in a swimming pool Monday, the news release said.
The case was ruled an accidental drowning.
Abel's family was having lunch at a relative's house in the 2000 block of Sherwood Avenue Monday when he fell into the backyard swimming pool, according to police
Bakersfield Police Department Sgt. Mary DeGeare said Abel and other children younger than 9 years old were playing in and outside of the home while the adults were inside. Abel was unaccounted for for about one to three minutes before he found was unconscious and face down in the water, police said.
There was not gate around the pool or cover on it, according to DeGeare.
Abel's parents pulled him out of the pool and performed CPR while a relative called 911 and received CPR instructions from the Bakersfield City Fire Department, DeGeare said. Police and Fire Department personnel were sent to the home at 3:05 p.m.
The boy was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was stabilized and then airlifted to the children's hospital.
