By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

The driver of a car in which a Bakersfield man died early Sunday when it struck a semi truck, was alcohol-impaired, the California Highway Patrol said.

Samuel Isaac Alarcon, 21, died at the scene of the 2:33 a.m. accident at Old River Road just south of Highway 119.

According to the CHP, Alarcon was a passenger in a southbound 2005 Kia Rio driven by J. Mayorga-Espinal, 20, of Bakersfield on Old River Road.

Parminder Singh, 36, was driving a tractor trailer combination commercial vehicle northbound on Old River Road.

The CHP said in its report that Mayorga-Espinal was intoxicated, and allowed his car to drift into the northbound lane.

Alarcon, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene.

Mayorga-Espinal was taken to Kern Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Singh was taken to Bakersfield Heart Hospital with minor injuries.

The CHP is continuing its investigation.
