BPD warns pedestrians to be cautious

Bakersfield police reminded residents to watch out when they cross the street following a run in between a pickup truck and a pedestrian Friday night.
Police were called to the crash in the 1700 block of Union Avenue at 8:05 p.m., according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release. Bakersfield resident Willie Patricia Hill, 46, had been hit by a 1997 Dodge pickup driven by Manuel Ramirez, 21, also of Bakersfield, police said.
Hill was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Though the crash was reported as a hit and run, Ramirez contacted police at the scene and officers determined he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the news release said.
Police said Hill had gone into traffic "outside a designated crosswalk without due caution" causing the crash.
Police reminded pedestrians to use crosswalks when they are available and be cautious when stepping out into a roadway.
"Do not assume drivers will see you or have time to stop or avoid a collision," the news release said.
