Checkpoint yields three arrests for suspected DUI

Officers arrested three people on suspicion of DUI and found 33 drivers who didn't have a valid driver's license during a checkpoint held from 7 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday, according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release.
The DUI/ driver's license checkpoint took place in the 1400 block of Union Avenue. The BPD's traffic enforcement detail worked with partners in the Kern County AVOID coalition.
The department reported in a news release that:
* 727 vehicles passed through the location, and 706 were screened.
* of the 33 drivers without a valid driver's license, 11 had suspended licenses.
* 22 vehicles were impounded.
* Of 36 vehicles held for various offenses, 14 met the criteria of a vehicle code that allows officers to contact registered owners and release the vehicle to that person or a licensed driver before the end of the checkpoint.
The checkpoint is meant to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and reduce the number of people hurt or killed. The BPD, in its news release, urged the public to call 911 if they see an impaired driver.
