Kern County Sheriff's investigators were trying to piece together an officer-involved shooting that sent a man to Kern Medical Center Sunday afternoon.
Department spokesman Ray Pruitt said the shooting took place at about 6:14 p.m. near a residence in the 3300 block of Pioneer Drive in east Bakersfield.
A suspect was struck by fire and taken to KMC with moderate to major injuries, Pruitt said.
The man's name and age were not available and Pruitt was unable to say what the man was suspected of doing, whether other suspects were being sought or how many deputies were involved.
"We're still trying to determine what led up to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the shooting," he said shortly before 9 p.m.
Several blocks along Pioneer Drive were taped off Sunday evening; at least seven sheriff's patrol cars were parked along the thoroughfare.
