Gunman taken into custody following SWAT standoff

At 1:45 a.m. Monday, deputies responded to a home in the 700 block of Lomita Trail in Frazier Park.

The deputies were investigating a report of men entering the home while the homeowners were asleep inside. When deputies arrived, they contacted 46-year-old David Medina, who spoke to deputies through an open upstairs window.

Deputies determined that Medina lived in the home and was armed with a handgun. They tried to convince Medina to leave the home, but he refused.

Deputies also learned Medina had fired several rounds from the handgun through his closed bedroom door before they arrived.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team was called out and several homes around the residence were evacuated. Medina left the home and was taken into custody about 6:15 a.m.

It was later determined that Medina was the reporting party, and there was no evidence of an intruder entering the home.

Medina was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun, possession of an unregistered handgun, being a felon in possession of ammunition and discharging a gun in a grossly negligent manner.
