A man deputies say was armed with a handgun was shot and killed in an incident with Kern County Sheriff's deputies Wednesday night in Oildale.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, the unidentified man was on a motorcycle and refused to stop for deputies. He sped off before crashing about 10:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Beardsley Avenue.

Spokesman Ray Pruitt said two deputies fired their weapons.

The man, whose name and age have not been released, was taken to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies reported the man was armed with a handgun at the time of the shooting, and the gun has been recovered.

The department reported in a news release the man "was shot at least one time."

A K-9 struck by at least one round is expected to survive. Sheriff's officials have not said who shot the dog.

The shooting closed Beardsley Avenue between Plymouth and Oildale Drive for several hours, and sheriff's officials said it will continue to be closed Thursday during the ongoing investigation.
