Suspect shot after firing at Delano police

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

Delano police shot and injured a suspect who led them on a chase and then opened fire on officers Saturday morning.

Police said officers were called out about 11:50 a.m. regarding a disturbance. Someone pointed out a green pickup truck as the suspect vehicle and, as officers approached, the suspect sped off.

The suspect, whose named has not been released, led officers on a seven-minute chase outside city limits, but then headed back toward the city. As he traveled west on 9th Avenue, an SUV was heading south on Browning Road.

The suspect blew through a red light at the 9th Avenue-Browning Road intersection and was hit by the SUV, police said. The pickup then clipped a power pole.

The suspect crawled out of the passenger side of the pickup and began fire at officers, police said. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect numerous times.

He was airlifted to Kern Medical Center. The officers were uninjured.

The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
