An armed man with a dark blue bandana covering his face robbed a bank in the 4000 block of California Avenue Saturday afternoon in what Bakersfield police said was the latest in a surge of robberies at local financial institutions.
Detective Ted King said the robber got away with an undetermined amount of cash from the Chase branch at about 1 p.m.
The handgun-toting perpetrator was described as a white or Hispanic man in his 30s, about 6 feet 2 inches in height, with a husky build. A Bakersfield Police Department news release said he was dressed in a gray, long-sleeve, hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
The robbery follows a string of bank holdups, including one in April just a block away from Saturday's incident, King said.
"Bank robberies this year have been significantly more than last year," he said.
Anyone with information about the crime was urged to call the department at 327-7111.
