Community alert system helps lead to suspect's arrest

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

A community alert system utilized by the California City Police Department helped lead to the arrest of a suspect wanted on suspicion of attempted burglary.

Police said they received a call Tuesday regarding a suspicious person in the 8500 block of South Loop Boulevard. The suspect, later identified as George Stringer, entered a back yard and tried to open a door believed to lead to a residence.

The caller, a neighbor, confronted Stringer and took several pictures of him, police said. Detectives identified Stringer as a suspect and sent out a community alert on a system called Nixle, which sends text messages to residents who have signed up for the service.

Police received three calls reporting sightings of Stringer within a half hour of the alert being sent out. Friends of Stringer contacted him, and he turned himself in.
