Union Pacific crews worked through Sunday to clear the railroad tracks about a quarter mile east of the cable crossovers near Tehachapi after a major derailment of a freight train.

The northbound train dumped 18 of its cars on the ground and tore up portions of the track.

The derailment occurred at 1 a.m. Sunday. No one was injured and all of the derailed cars were empty at the time of the incident.

Union Pacific Spokesman Aaron Hunt said the derailment happened in an area with two parallel lines of track, and that as of 7 p.m. Sunday one line remained open while cleanup crews worked to clear the other.

Hunt said the cause of the derailment was not yet known and an investigation is ongoing.
