A 4-year-old boy died Wednesday afternoon north of downtown when he was hit by a car.

Bakersfield police said the accident occurred just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of 30th and Q streets. The boy, Gregorio Edward Leyva, was taken to Memorial Hospital where he died.

According to police, a woman was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition southbound on Q Street and made a turn west onto 30th Street. Witnesses said the boy ran in front of the SUV in the 800 block of 30th Street and was struck. Neither drugs, alcohol nor speed appear to be a factor.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Officer Jarod Diederich at 327-7111.
