Bakersfield man dies after fall from downtown parking garage

By BREAKING NEWS

Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Bakersfield man who died after he fell from a downtown parking garage Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew Jones fell from the roof of a four-story parking structure on the corner of 19th and L streets at 2:53 p.m., according to the Kern County Sheriff's Coroner Section and Bakersfield police. He died at 3:31 p.m. at Kern Medical Center from his injuries.

Bakersfield Police Department Sgt. Jason Townsend said a bystander heard the impact of Jones hitting the sidewalk. She rolled him over and called 911 when she saw blood, Townsend said.

Several hours after Jones fell, police were still piecing together what happened. Townsend said officers were not sure if the man jumped or fell, but that police are investigating the case as a suspicious death.

A coworker saw Jones walking on top of the garage but did not see Jones fall, Townsend said.
