By BREAKING NEWS BLOG
At 6:54 p.m. Thursday, Bakersfield police responded to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 2000 block of East Brundage Lane.
The pedestrian had been struck by a van driven by Mary Elvia Cruz of Bakersfield. Cruz stopped to render aid, but the pedestrian was hit by a second vehicle. The driver of that vehicle left the scene.
Cruz remained, and was found to be not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The pedestrian, an adult woman, was taken to a local hospital where she died a short time later. Her identity has not yet been confirmed.
There is no crosswalk in the area where the pedestrian was hit, and it's unknown if she was crossing the street or just walking in the roadway.
Officers are searching for a light-colored compact car similar to a 1990s Honda or Toyota.
Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Nicholas Gospich at the Bakersfield Police department at 327-7111.
