Firefighter's torso hurt while working at Taft structure fire

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A Kern County firefighter injured his torso when he fell through the ground into a 10-foot-deep room underneath a garage while combating a structure fire in Taft on Tuesday night, said Kern County Fire Department Capt. Eric Coughran.

The firefighter was taken to Kern Medical Center for his injuries, which Coughran classified as moderate.

The fire started at about 6 p.m. in the 600 block of Lucard Street. Firefighters found a detached garage converted into a residence 75 percent engulfed. Three other structures surrounding the garage were threatened, Coughran said.

By the time firefighters fully contained the fire, the garage was completely burned down, but the other structures were intact, Coughran said. He estimated damage to be $20,000.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside. But after they knocked down the fire, they went inside to assess it, Coughran said. That's when the firefighter fell through the ground and hurt his torso.

No one was in the garage at the time of fire, Coughran said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
